Volunteers Are the Heart of our House!

Why Volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana?
The Ronald McDonald House of Indiana is a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill or injured children who must travel to Indianapolis for their child's medical treatment. The House provides a refuge where families can support each other, cook a meal, share a laugh, shed a tear and find comfort during stressful times. Since opening in 1982, volunteers have made it possible for our doors to remain open for thousands of families in need. So whether you are looking for an ongoing commitment or want to share a special gift or talent on a more short-term basis, there is a way for you to make a difference at the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana!

Become a Guest Services Volunteer
Being a Guest Services Volunteer is a special way for volunteers to work closely with the families staying at the House. Guest Services Volunteers work one three-hour shift every other week and are responsible for doing many important duties at the House. They staff the office and assist with everything from answering phones to preparing mailings and checking families in and out of their rooms. Guest Services Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. All volunteers go through an application process, health screening, background check and attend training sessions that prepare them for their role. We ask for a year's commitment for this position. Please contact Mary Friend, Volunteer Services Manager at the Ronald McDonald House at (317) 269-2247 ext. 225 or at mfriend@rmh-indiana.org.

Prepare a Home-Cooked Meal
There is nothing more comforting for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House than to come "home" to a hot home-cooked meal after a long day of sitting by the bedside of their critically ill child. The House is always looking for volunteer groups that are willing to prepare a meal for approximately 50 people. Your group can choose to serve breakfast or dinner for the families. Groups should be prepared to bring the food, utensils and paper products needed for the meal. The meal program is a rewarding way for groups to interact with those they are helping. The meal program is quite popular so plan on scheduling your group months in advance. If the members of your group are 16 years of age and older and would like to participate in this fantastic service opportunity, please contact Marlene Tran, our Meal Coordinator at (317) 269-2247 ext. 246. We also welcome parents with younger, supervised children to participate in this activity.

Casserole Club
The Casserole Club is an extension of our meal program at the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana. The Casserole Club is designed to utilize the many individual volunteers who are interested in helping from their home or office by providing meals for the families. Each Casserole Club volunteer is asked to bring their casserole in a disposable 9x13 covered dish, (it may be frozen) with the date it was assembled, labeled with the recipe and list of ingredients and any cooking instructions. Casseroles are stored in the freezer and taken out as needed. Please contact Marlene Tran, our Meal Coordinator to schedule your casserole drop off at (317) 269-2247 ext. 246.

Community Outreach, Special Events and Tasks
Throughout the year, there are numerous opportunities for volunteers to help share the Ronald McDonald House mission with others. Share your special talents and time by conducting tours of the House, join the Speaker's Bureau, help staff information booths as well as coat check booths at community events and festivals.

Another, short-term volunteer opportunity that is great for earning community service hours for school is acting as a meal host. Provide some Hoosier hospitality to the groups that donate the meals for our House guests. The shifts are about 3 hours in length and you choose the dates that fit into your schedule.

Help is also needed with special events and tasks. Information on some of our special event opportunities is available on our website at www.rmh-indiana.org.

Please contact the Mary Friend, Volunteer Services Manager if you are interested in assisting with one of these opportunities at (317) 269-2247 ext. 225 or at mfriend@rmh-indiana.org.

Help with an In-House Service Project
Just as with any home, it takes a lot of work and manpower to keep the Ronald McDonald House tidy and neat. We always welcome volunteer groups that are interested in performing service projects, such as dusting, sweeping and cleaning kitchen areas as well as various other tasks around the House. These service projects are geared toward volunteers age 16 years and older. The House limits the size of the group to 15 people. Contact Mary Friend, Volunteer Services Manager if you are interested in scheduling a service project at (317) 269-2247 ext. 225 or at mfriend@rmh-indiana.org.

Out-of-House Service Projects
There are many different service projects that can be completed to help the families staying at the House without coming to the House. Once completed all the service projects need to be dropped off at the Ronald McDonald House. These projects are appropriate for children under the age of 16, some large groups or organizations and anyone else interested in helping the House in some way. Examples of these service projects include making "Thinking of You" cards for the families and children, hold a pantry or wish list drive, make activity bags for the children, collect pop tabs or make door decorations for the guestrooms at the House. For more information regarding youth service projects, contact Sara Risley, Community Outreach Manager at (317) 269-2247, ext. 207 or at srisley@rmh-indiana.org.
